Vienna is a beautiful city, but exploring it doesn't have to break the bank. From free attractions to affordable food and transportation, here are practical tips to help you make the most of your trip without overspending.

1. Free Attractions and Sights
While many attractions in Vienna charge an entry fee, there are plenty of free options to explore. To make it easier for you, I’ve clearly marked these no-cost sights in my Vienna Travel Guide.

While the palace itself charges an entry fee, the expansive gardens are free to wander. Take a stroll through the beautiful grounds, fountains, and flower beds at no cost.

The front part near the entrance can be visited for free. Also attending a mass is free. But even if you want to see more, it only costs a few Euro. You can also pay a small fee (around 5-6 EUR) to go up one of the towers for a panoramic view of the city.

2. Save money for entry tickets
If you plan to visit many sights you might want to look into Combo Tickets, like the Vienna Pass or the Flexi Pass.

Save money with combo tickets for multiple attractions. For example with the Vienna Pass you can visit 90 attractions with only one ticket. To help you spot these sights, I also specifically marked them in my Vienna Travel Guide.
Many attractions have multiple locations and offer combination tickets. Visiting several locations becomes more affordable this way. For example, the "Sisi Ticket" combines Schönbrunn Palace and the Hofburg.

Even prestigious venues like the State Opera, the Spanish Riding School, and the Musikverein offer standing room tickets. These tickets are much cheaper (often just a few euros), but you’ll need to stand during the performance.

Many museums in Vienna offer free entry on the first Sunday of every month. You can visit the Beethoven Museum, the Museum of Military History, and more at no charge. More details on the websites of the museums.

3. Budget Sightseeing Tours

4. Affordable Transportation

If you're flying into Vienna, the cheapest way to reach the city center is by taking the ÖBB train or S7 Schnellbahn. These options are far more affordable than the really expensive City Airport Train or taxis. Plus: The travel time is almost the same or even faster! I made a full video on all the options how to get from the airport to the city center.

Vienna’s public transport system is operated by Wiener Linien. You can purchase single-ride tickets, as well as day or multi-day passes. For all the details, check out my full guide on getting around Vienna.

Rent a bike through the Wien Mobil Bike program. It's an eco-friendly and affordable way to get around and explore Vienna on two wheels.

5. Food & Drink saving Tips
There are plenty of budget-friendly options where you can enjoy authentic Viennese food without breaking the bank.

Vienna’s tap water is of exceptional quality and comes from the Alps. Refill your water bottle at the numerous public drinking fountains around the city, or simply drink from the tap in restaurants.

Many bakeries usually have a small corner with tables, where you can enjoy a classic Viennese breakfast. It consists of two rolls with butter and jam or honey, accompanied by coffee or tea. Popular bakeries like Anker, Ströck, and Felber offer great value for money.

Many restaurants offer a "dish of the day" or lunch menu, which can cost as little as 8,50 EUR, much cheaper than regular meals.

For an inexpensive, authentic Viennese experience, visit a Würstelstand for sausages like the famous Kaesekrainer (cheese-filled sausage). It's cheap, quick, and delicious.

If you're looking for an even cheaper option, you could get a sandwich at a supermarket. Many supermarkets have a fresh counter where they prepare you a sandwich according to your wishes. There's no extra charge for putting it together, and you only pay for the bread, sausage, and cheese. If you want to try a typical Viennese sandwich, order an "Extrawurstsemmel". This is a roll filled with slices of a bologna type sausage. And usually, it is served with pickled cucumber.

And another idea for eating out: you can get a percentage off your bill, if you book your table via the online platform "the fork".
Another option to cut down your food expenses, is to use the too good to go app. This app helps to save unsold food. You just search for a restaurant or supermarket and buy the unsold food for a cheaper price.
6. Free Wi-Fi
Vienna offers plenty of free Wi-Fi hotspots across the city. Look for "free Wi-Fi" signs, or use the official Stadt Wien app to find them. Many cafés also provide free Wi-Fi, so feel free to ask for the password when you pop in for a coffee.

1. Gratis Sehenswürdigkeiten
Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten in Wien kosten Eintritt, aber es gibt auch zahlreiche kostenlose Optionen.

Während der Palast selbst Eintritt kostet, sind die weitläufigen Gärten kostenlos zugänglich. Spaziere durch die schönen Anlagen, vorbei an Brunnen und Blumenbeeten – ganz ohne Kosten.

Du kannst dieses Wahrzeichen kostenlos besuchen, besonders wenn du an einer Messe teilnimmst. Für einen kleinen Betrag (ca. 5–6 EUR) kannst du auch einen der Türme besteigen und die Panoramaaussicht über die Stadt genießen.

Der Eintritt ins Besucherzentrum ist kostenlos, und du kannst auch eine kostenlose Führung buchen (mit vorheriger Anmeldung).

Kostenlose Führungen durch dieses beeindruckende Gebäude sind verfügbar, aber du musst deinen Platz früh am Morgen persönlich reservieren.
2. Sparen beim Eintritt
Wenn du viele Sehenswürdigkeiten besuchen möchtest, könnten Kombi-Tickets wie der Vienna Pass oder der Flexi Pass eine Option für dich sein..

Spare Geld mit Kombi-Tickets für mehrere Attraktionen. Zum Beispiel kannst du mit dem Vienna Pass 90 Sehenswürdigkeiten mit nur einem Ticket besuchen.
Viele Attraktionen haben mehrere Standorte und bieten Kombi-Tickets an. Der Besuch mehrerer Standorte wird so erschwinglicher. Zum Beispiel kombiniert das „Sisi Ticket“ das Schloss Schönbrunn und die Hofburg.

Selbst prestigeträchtige Veranstaltungsorte wie die Staatsoper, die Spanische Hofreitschule und der Musikverein bieten Stehplatzkarten an. Diese Tickets sind viel günstiger (oft nur ein paar Euro), aber du musst während der Aufführung stehen.

Viele Museen in Wien bieten am ersten Sonntag jedes Monats freien Eintritt. Du kannst das Beethoven-Museum, das Heeresgeschichtliche Museum und weitere Museen kostenlos besuchen. Schau am besten dazu auf der Website des jeweilligen Museums nach.

3. Sightseeing Touren um wenig Geld
Eine Sightseeing-Tour gibt dir mehr Hintergrund in die Geschichte Wiens. Wenn du ein knappes Budget hast oder flexibel bleiben möchtest, könnte mein Audioguide eine gute Alternative sein.

Wenn du lieber in deinem eigenen Tempo unterwegs bist, solltest du einen günstigen Audioguide in Betracht ziehen. Er ist günstiger als eine geführte Tour und du kannst die Route ganz nach deinen Interessen gestalten.

Erkunde die Wiener Ringstraße (die prächtige Straße, die das Stadtzentrum umgibt) mit der Straßenbahn oder dem Fahrrad. Beide Optionen sind viel günstiger als die Sightseeing-Busse.

Erkunde Wien mit einer kostenlosen, geführten Tour. Diese Touren sind zwar kostenlos, aber es ist üblich, dem Guide ein Trinkgeld zwischen 10 und 20 EURO zu geben, wenn du mit der Erfahrung zufrieden bist.

4. Mobil um wenige Euro

Wenn du nach Wien fliegst, ist die günstigste Möglichkeit, ins Stadtzentrum zu gelangen, die ÖBB-Bahn oder die S7 Schnellbahn. Diese Optionen sind deutlich günstiger als der teure City Airport Train oder Taxis. Außerdem: Die Fahrt dauert fast genauso lange oder sogar kürzer! Miete ein Fahrrad über das Wien Mobil Bike-Programm. Es ist eine umweltfreundliche und günstige Möglichkeit, sich fortzubewegen und Wien auf zwei Rädern zu erkunden.

Um noch mehr zu sparen, erwäge zu Fuß zu gehen, besonders im Stadtzentrum, wo die Sehenswürdigkeiten nahe beieinander liegen. So kannst du auch die schönen Umgebungen in deinem eigenen Tempo genießen.

5. Sparen beim Essen & Trinken
Es gibt viele günstige Optionen, bei denen du authentisches Wiener Essen genießen kannst, ohne viel Geld auszugeben.

Wiens Leitungswasser hat sehr gute Qualität und stammt direkt aus den Alpen. Du kannst deine Wasserflasche an den vielen öffentlichen Trinkbrunnen in der Stadt auffüllen oder einfach in Restaurants aus dem Wasserhahn trinken.

Bäckereien haben üblicherweise eine kleine Ecke mit Tischen. Dort kannst du dir auch ein klassisches Wiener Frühstück schmecken lassen. Das besteht aus zwei Brötchen mit Butter und Marmelade oder Honig, begleitet von Kaffee oder Tee. Beliebte Bäckereien wie Anker, Ströck und Felber bieten ein gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.

Viele Restaurants bieten ein "Tagesgericht" oder ein Mittagsmenü an, das schon ab 8,50 EUR kostet – deutlich günstiger als reguläre Gerichte.

Für ein günstiges, authentisches Wiener Erlebnis besuche einen Würstelstand und genieße Würstchen wie die berühmte Käsekrainer (Käsewürstchen). Es ist preiswert, schnell und lecker. Übrigens das Wiener Würstchen heißt bei uns “Frankfurter”!

Wenn du nach einer noch günstigeren Option suchst, kannst du dir ein belegtes Brötchen in einem Supermarkt holen. Viele Supermärkte haben eine Frischetheke, an der dir ein Sandwich nach deinen Wünschen zubereitet wird. Für die Zusammenstellung wird kein Aufpreis verlangt, du zahlst nur für das Brötchen, die Wurst und den Käse. Wenn du ein typisches Wiener belegtes Brötchen probieren möchtest, bestelle eine "Extrawurstsemmel". Dabei handelt es sich um ein Brötchen, das mit Scheiben einer Art Fleischwurst gefüllt ist. Üblicherweise wird es mit eingelegten Gurken serviert.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit, beim Essen Geld zu sparen, ist die Buchung eines Tisches über die Online-Plattform "The Fork", bei der du einen Prozentsatz vom Rechnungsbetrag sparen kannst.
Eine weitere Option, um deine Essenskosten zu senken, ist die Nutzung der App "Too Good To Go". Diese App hilft, unverkaufte Lebensmittel zu retten. Du suchst einfach nach einem Restaurant oder Supermarkt und kannst die übrig gebliebenen Lebensmittel zu einem günstigeren Preis kaufen.
6. Gratis WLAN
Wien bietet zahlreiche kostenlose Wi-Fi-Hotspots in der ganzen Stadt. Achte auf "free Wi-Fi"-Schilder oder nutze die offizielle Stadt Wien App, um sie zu finden. Viele Cafés bieten ebenfalls kostenloses Wi-Fi an, also frag einfach nach dem Passwort, wenn du auf einen Kaffee vorbeischaust.
