What to pack for Vienna

Don't forget to pack these items for your trip to Vienna.

Hi, I am Grete

Vienna Local Guide Grete Walz

I’m a native Austrian and have called Vienna home for over 20 years. As a certified Austrian Tour Guide, I know this city like the back of my hand. Curious to learn more about Vienna? Let me show you the city I love!

Vienna Must Haves

Electronics

Power Adapter

If you are traveling from the US or UK, don’t forget to bring a power adapter with you, since the power outlets are different in Austria.

Info: Germany and Austria have the same power outlets.

Power Bank

My phone always runs out of battery. If yours is the same, take a power bank with you, so you don't run out of battery while exploring Vienna.

Don’t forget to check that your device is compatable!

Luggage Tags

Did you ever lose your luggage while traveling? I have! What really helped me to get more peace of mind was putting some tags into my luggage. So I can always see where it is. I have provided two links: one for Apple and one for Android/Samsung devices.

Luggage

Suitcase

Opt for a small or mid-sized suitcase with wheels for easy maneuvering, especially if you plan to use public transport. Personally, I like to use the suitcases from SAMSONITE or TITAN, since the price and quality is really good.

Small Backpack

Ideal for your daytime adventures, a compact backpack can carry your essentials while exploring. I love my small grey backpack from Kaukko.

Extra Purse & Fanny Pack

Keep a separate purse for Euros to avoid currency mix-ups. Also think about a fanny pack for valuables. Pick-Pocket is not that common in Vienna as in other major cities in europe. But it can happen. So better be save than sorry.

Pack for the weather

Umbrella

Rain can surprise you throughout the year, so an umbrella is a year-round essential. Personally I love to use my pink umbrella, with which my guests can spot me easily in big crowds. But of course almost any umbrella will do.

Weather-appropriate clothing

Be prepared for temperature variations, with light clothing for summer and warm layers for winter. Even in summer, bring a pullover and a light jacket for cooler evenings.

Summer Essentials

Hat/Cap

Many guests are surprised, how strong the sun is in summer. Protect yourself from the strong summer sun, especially when visiting places with limited shade, like Schönbrunn park or the city center.

Sunscreen

If you have a preferred sunscreen brand, bring it along, although you can purchase sunscreen in Vienna. I prefer the sunscreen from la roche posay, since it is super lightweight and reliable.

Water Bottle

As already described in Vienna Budget Tips, Vienna tap water is excellent. Don’t waste your money on buying bottled water and use a refillable water bottle. I like the air up bottles, which flavours water through scent. But of course, any reusable bottle will do.
